I Can’t Even Afford To Work In London
Because London is so expensive that most of us can’t afford to work there.
It might sound crazy, but even to work in a certain place, we need to be able to afford it.
This is a very common type of worry around internships and lower-paid positions, when only people that already have a certain lifestyle can afford to take them. How can you accept a job that doesn’t even cover your basic bills?
The average human being needs a job that covers all their basic bills and allows them to save while enjoying life (I know this is idealistic).
Recently, I needed to go to London for work two days a week, which cost me almost £50. The tickets were £10.60 per day, and I spent around £13 on my lunch each day. I didn’t have access to a fridge or a microwave. If I needed to go to work in London every day, I wouldn’t be able to afford it on my yearly salary. That would cost me monthly around £212, plus around £260 on food, if not more. I wrote about this before.
Even to work, we got to spend money. In the case of living the office working lifestyle in London, you also need to consider the money you will spend on outfits to look presentable and more. And if your co-workers go for drinks after work, at least once in a while, you got to join them…
