Life Maintenance: The Thing We Tend To Forget About
There is no improvement without maintenance.
Most of the content produced about self-improvement is about starting a new routine that will make us achieve all our goals and be the best version of ourselves. This can make us forget that we need to maintain this routine. Otherwise, we will relapse, and we need to start again.
The problem with human improvement is that this is not a straight line. You don’t go from A to B, and once you are there, all is done and finished. Life is organic, and it comes in cycles. It doesn’t matter how hard we try; we will have relapses because they are part of the process, like the seasons, our lives change during a year, and our needs are different during the summer, winter, spring and fall. But if we learn how to do the proper maintenance, we won’t need to restart; we will just need to keep going, probably with some bumps on the road, but nothing that can set us back again.
Two gardeners come to my building every Monday morning to cut the grass. Every single Monday, without fail, they are here. No matter what, the grass will keep growing, and if they don’t come to cut it, our beautiful garden will just become messy and dirty. This is a simple example of maintenance.
