Most of Us Live in Democracies, so Why Do We Still Feel So Powerless?

Maybe being able to vote is not the solution to our problems.

I am not sure about you, but I haven’t been feeling well lately. I moved from Brazil, a democratic government, to the UK, another democratic government, but I feel powerless. Soon, I will be able to vote in the UK, but I don’t think this will make me feel more powerful. Voting is not the answer, unfortunately. Our leaders are failing us, and there isn’t anyone else to take their spot.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to vote for someone who actually does what they say they will do? To make our country better, to make our lives better. I mentioned before that all I want is to live in a country where I know I will be cared for if my health collapses and my (future) children will have a good education. This is not true anymore in England. And it was never true in Brazil.

The problem is that in Brazil, people know that they can’t count on the government. That’s why I grew up with a private medical plan and attending private schools. This is affordable for the middle class in Brazil, but it’s not for the middle class in the UK. Here, I need the government to deliver what is promised. I can’t afford it otherwise.
