Once upon a time, I was a girl that wanted to be a Doctor Without Borders. At 16 years old, I used to spend most of my time online collecting pictures from African countries and learning about them.

That was my dream: take care of people in need in “poor” countries. It’s funny because Brazil is also pretty “poor” in some areas but I wanted to save people from Africa, not from Brazil.

PS: These countries are not poor, their problem is only one: the people in power are getting richer and richer while most of their population is exploited and kept in poverty. They are richer in resources than many “rich” countries.

I had a friend at school that also had the same dream.

Every day we used to talk about how the world was unfair, how people were struggling and how we would work to save the world being doctors. We used to get really sad about the world’s situation. How could we be happy if there was so much suffering in the world? I was an interesting teenager, because that was my genuine concern at the time, instead of partying or getting involved with boys.

Every Friday evening, my father used to take me to a McCafe in São Paulo, Brazil for our weekly catch up. I used to…
