Working From Home Is Only Good Because Of These Things
It’s not that we don’t want to work in “the office”, it’s because working in “the office” is no good.
I love working from home (and I am grateful for my job and aware of my privilege to have this job), but sometimes I miss parts of the life of working in “the office”. And then, I remember how awful it can be to work in “the office”, and I am happy again with my life of remote work.
I also know that I am missing out on many things because I work from home. My relationship with my co-workers is entirely remote, and many people make friends in the work environment. The connection is much deeper when you see someone everyday face to face. I don’t have these connections, and I am not making friends at work.
Some studies also affirm that in the long term, people that work from home are less likely to be promoted or achieve higher positions. This is due to the lack of visibility at work, when the bosses can’t “see” day to day how you are performing, they can’t trust you as much. And to be 100% honest, by working from home, I am not so worried any more about my titles. I am more worried about my quality of life. Being at home in a certain way does make us less competitive because it opens your eyes to other things you can’t even think about…
